Similar to Public, but specifically focuses on the needs and interests of its community. HCR is a 501(c)(3) Illinois not-for-profit corporation. As such, HCR, unlike commercial radio, is not allowed to raise funds from advertising. All operating and capital funds are acquired through donations and grants.
HCR’s mission is succinctly stated in its motto: “Keeping Huntley Informed and Connected”. In support of HCR’s mission, no other communications medium that serves the Huntley community can provide community alerts, announcements, and information of general interest to all segments of the Huntley area community in as timely a manner as HCR can. HCR has the unique capability of communicating and interacting with its Huntley area listening community several hours each day of the year. This form of communication and the station’s intent to interact with its listeners via call-ins during on-air broadcasts inherently brings the community together with shared knowledge and insight.
Community organizations are able to better inform and connect with all Huntley residents and those who directly serve our community. These community organizations include the Huntley village government; the police and fire departments; School District 158; the Library and Park Districts; the numerous community service organizations; and businesses represented by the Huntley Chamber of Commerce.
When the concept for this low-power FM station was initially conceived, this statement was true; however, it’s untrue today. The mission, scope, operation, and community involvement now focuses on the needs and interests of the entire Huntley community.
By law, as a low-power FM station, HCR is restricted to broadcasting at a signal strength no greater than 100 watts from a height no greater than 100 feet above ground level. This in effect limits its broadcast distance to approximately 5 radial miles from HCR’s transmitting antenna atop the Huntley water tower at Haligus and Kruetzer Roads without a perceived weakness in its signal. All of Huntley and portions of Lake In The Hills, Gilberts, Lakewood, Algonquin, and Hampshire are covered within this distance.
Of course, all HCR programs will be simulcasts over the internet, so listeners who have internet access anywhere in the world will be able to listen to HCR.

HCR officially began its operation as an internet radio station on September 28, 2012. With approval of a construction permit from the FCC in the fall of 2014, HCR expanded its operation to broadcast as a Low-Power FM station to the Huntley community.
HCR receives it funding through small and large donations and through grants. All donations are fully tax deductible. Individual donations in excess of $100 receive recognition on the HCR website, the HCR Facebook page, and in HCR promotional materials. Donations of $500 or more receive the above recognition in addition to increasing levels of on-air acknowledgements and sponsorship recognition based upon the amount of financial support given. HCR is forbidden by its charter to accept any tax dollars to subside any of its financial obligations.
HCR’s studios and office space are in the Deicke Park Building located in Deicke Park at 11419 S. Route 47, Huntley, IL. This space is made available through a licensing agreement between HCR and the Huntley Park District to house the HCR studios, a management office, office cubicles for various production activity including program editing, a reception area, and storage space.

Equally important are the volunteers without whom HCR could not exist. Except for the programming manager who is responsible for scheduling all programming, the station is run entirely by volunteers.

No. All volunteers receive formal and on-hands training. Of course, prior broadcast experience reduces a volunteer’s learning curve.
As a volunteer, the time spent with HCR should be fun, and that includes the right to volunteer during times that best meet a volunteer’s schedule and lifestyle. However, some positions require greater degrees of time specific commitments; e.g. hosting or being involved in the production of a regularly scheduled program.
True. McHenry Community College (MCC) has established a Radio Internship Program with HCR. This program is supervised jointly by faculty members in the MCC Independent Studies in Humanities Department and HCR. Each semester, up to six interns are assigned to the station where they are trained in all aspects of radio production, including sound engineering, program editing, program development and hosting, and remote broadcasting. These interns comprise a mix of MCC students who have served as interns at HCR previously, and students who are new to the program.
In addition, HCR has established a collaborative partnership with the Career and Technical Education Department of Huntley High School (HHS) to provide a similar training experience as offered to the MCC interns. As of January, 2014, the HCR Director of Youth Programming and Development is guiding several HHS Radio Broadcasting Club students in the development of their own HCR radio show.
